At least 200 properties have been flooded in Dunedin as heavy rain has hit the area.

The event is being described as a one-in-100-year event after 175 millimetres of rain in 24 hours.

The main damage was done on Wednesday night with the rain easing on Thursday.

The 175 millimetres of rain that the area experienced is the usual rainfall for two months. This overwhelmed the drainage systems, closing at least 15 streets and some schools, disrupting travel and forcing evacuations.

Dunedin Mayor Dave Cull has set up a mayoralty fund for those who may need help to get back into their homes. He has not disclosed the amount in the fund.
